How long are lab’s in heat?

I don’t know why I didn’t see this coming. Sadie is now in her first “heat”. Of course, next weekend is our anniversary and we had plans to go skiing in the Poconos. Fortunately we have light hardwood floors in our house, so it’s easy to spot and easy to clean. Unfortunately, my parents (who were going to watch Sadie for us) have rugs in every room of their house and are not ok with Sadie coming over.
So how long are dogs in heat? I find many articles stating that the average dog goes into heat for 5 - 9 days. Many do state that the bitch can go into heat for up to 14 days. Needless to say, we have a call into the breeder to find out how long her bitches normally go into heat for.
I’m reading about diapers and other products I can strap on or attach to the dog. Have you ever used one on your dog? Do you have any suggestions for a 75 pound hyper happy lab (puppy)?
