World meet Sadie. Sadie, get down!
Sadie is a chocolate Labrador retriever, born 3/5/2007. She joined our family when she turned 3 months old. I’ve been a dog owner before, but my wife has not. Picking the right dog from the right breeder was as important to me as picking the right breed was to my wife. We have two young children (3 & 5). My son (3) who was deathly afraid of dogs and my daughter (5) could care less about having a dog.
I am very fortunate to work at a Long Island based newspaper, who employees Denise Flaim, author of The Holistic Dog Book: Canine Care for the 21st Century and Getting Lucky: How One Special Dog Found Love and a Second Chance at Angel’s Gate. Denise has an amazing wealth of knowledge and pure passion for animals. She has a blog for Newsday, “Animal House” (I’ve also added it to my blog roll). It was Denise that turned me on to the AKC’s website for finding “the right breeder”. After a few days of research, we found a lab breeder out in New Jersey that offered all papers & history on both the parents and grandparents.
Since Sadie has joined our lives, we’ve become well educated in dog training, food (holistic, kibble, wet, etc), tricks and more. We’ve had trainers come to our house and have attended puppy training classes. While Sadie is an amazing dog, socialization with strangers and other dogs have become areas that we know we have to address and work on.
Sadie has been a great addition to our family. She’s certainly an active dog that requires a lot of attention and love, but she’s the perfect dog for us and I personally, don’t have any regrets. I can’t actually say the same for my wife, but you can see she loves the dog.
